If you’re visiting the Cairns and Port Douglas region, there is no doubt you’ll have a few major bucket list items to tick off while you’re here. The world heritage listed Great Barrier Reef attracts hundreds of thousands of tourists to Cairns and Port Douglas every year (and for good reason, it’s amazing!) and our impressive Daintree Rainforest and Wet Tropics World Heritage Area is a must do for everyone visiting, living or just passing through the region.

If you’re nervous about your first time snorkelling on the Great Barrier Reef or have been searching for tips on what to expect for your first time snorkelling on the Great Barrier Reef, we’ll let you know now that you’re in for an extraordinary day of swimming, snorkelling and admiring our world heritage wonder.

For those who are looking for a calm and easy introduction to snorkelling before heading out to the Great Barrier Reef, we recommend our Back Country Bliss Adventures’ River Drift Snorkelling Tour. This family friendly tour along the Mossman River is a great way to ease yourself into snorkelling while discovering the delights and impressive flora and fauna of the incredible Daintree Rainforest on the way.

It’s calm

For most of the year the Mossman River runs at a slow and steady pace meaning you’ll float gently down the river current, taking in the underwater sights.

It’s shallow

In addition to being calm for most of the year, the Mossman River is also quite low and mostly at standing height, providing increased confidence for those first time snorkelling or who are still finding their comfort in the water.

It’s appropriate for most ages

As the Mossman River is low and calm for the majority of the year, during this time, River Drift Snorkelling is generally suitable for ages 3 and above with a range of swimming abilities. If you have any younger members of the family, River Drift Snorkelling is a great introduction to first time snorkelling before heading out to the Great Barrier Reef.

During our wetter months, when the river is higher and flows faster this tour is only suitable for strong swimmers aged 15 and above. If you have any concerns about your swimming ability, please do not hesitate to contact us.
